Media mogul and X Factor founder Simon Cowell decided to launch a cookery show after reportedly gaining inspiration from MasterChef Australia. The Australian cookery series – which became the world’s most successful MasterChef – caught Cowell’s attention when it beat his own show, Australia’s Got Talent in the ratings race by five to one in 2009.
Simon Cowell is hoping to attract the top names in cooking, with the aim of franchising the series around the world. He will run the series through his production firm Syco and plans to start work on it next year after US X Factor comes to a close.
A spokesperson at Syco said, “Si's aim is always to have the most-watched show and he has seen how popular these food series have been. He is also a big fan of home cooking and likes the idea of offering the opportunity of a lifetime to someone with a passion for food. He has been thinking of branching out from music and variety shows for a while. And though his workload is far too hectic at the moment, he has high hopes for the idea.”
Cowell, a self-confessed food lover, is not afraid to throw money at the best cuisine – he has just spent £25,000 on two pizza ovens for his home. With this in mind, Cowell’s venture into television cookery could be a success.
