A Facebook campaign which encourages users to upload an image of their favourite cartoon character has gone viral, however the campaign, which purports to fight child abuse, has run into controversy.
The campaign, which encourages Facebook users to change their profile picture to an image of a cartoon character has in excess of 90,000 members and was originally believed to have been started by the child protection agency the NSPCC.
The NSPCC has denied its involvement on social networking site Twitter, however it has welcomes the publicity for the work the charity carries out. It said: “Although the NSPCC did not originate the childhood cartoon Facebook campaign, we welcome the attention it has brought to the work we do.”
Since the charity revealed it is not responsible for the campaign, rumours have emerged on social networking forums that the campaign is a smokescreen for paedophiles who hope that having a cartoon character as their picture will encourage children to become their friends on Facebook.
The campaign message reads: “Change for FB picture to a cartoon from your childhood. The goal is not to see a human face on FB until Monday (Dec 6) Join the fight against child abuse and copy and paste your status!”
No one has taken responsibility for the group.
The campaign went viral over the weekend, with Google trends highlighting the most recently searched items on the internet as cartoon characters.
