Sony has announced they are offering its cloud-based digital music service to users across Europe in France, Germany, Italy and Spain. "Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity" debuted in the UK and Ireland in December 2010 and will go head to head with established streaming services such as Spotify, Pandora and Last.fm.
Cloud-based technology enables users to store all their music on a remote server (cloud) rather than download onto a computer and save on a specific device. Sony's Music Unlimited Service also provides users with around six million tracks to stream from all four major record labels (Universal, Sony, Warner and EMI).
The streaming service can be accessed via a wide range of Sony products and is not just limited to one device.
"Users can play music any time through ‘Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity’ on a wide variety of Internet-connected Sony devices including Sony’s 2010 and 2011 models of network-enabled BRAVIA® TV, Blu-ray Disc™ player, Blu-ray Disc Home Theatre system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system as well as VAIO and other personal computers,” according to a Sony press release.
Sony look to capitalise on current trends focused around cloud-based services with US-based newcomer mSpot also revealing their intentions to secure big record label agreements at this year’s MIDEM music industry convention.
Business Review Europe has recently reported on other new trends which look to boost the music industry such as Disrupt.fm offering free music downloads on Facebook.
Sony's basic subscription package costing 3.99 Euro per month offers an infinite ad-free radio station where subscribers can listen to dozens of personalised channels. The Premium package costing 9.99 Euro per month enables users to listen in full to any song on demand and create personal playlists.
