Samsung and other DRAM producers fined by EU

The companies involved – Samsung, Hynix, Infineon, NEC, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Elpida and Nanya – have been fined a total of 331 million euros for fixing the prices of memory chips or DRAMS.   A 10th chip maker, Micron, was also part of the price-fixing cartel but escaped a fine in return for alerting the competition authorities.  

EADS: Quarterly profits fell

Net profit for the January to March quarter fell to 103 million euros from 170 million euros a year ago.   The figures included a profit of 7 million euros for the Airbus commercial planemaking unit. Last year the unit made 89 million euros.  

Land Rover: 275 new Solihull jobs

Land Rover said the jobs were needed to support an increase in demand following several months of improved sales.   Phil Popham, Land Rover’s Managing Director, said: “These positions are excellent news for the manufacturing industry in the Midlands.”   The plant already employs 5,000.

Daimler: We Will Join Renault-Nissan Alliance

The global motor industry consolidated further today as Daimler announced it has joined the Renault-Nissan alliance.   Under the terms of a deal, Daimler will take a 3.1 percent stake in Renault-Nissan and Renault and Nissan will each take a 1.55 percent stake in Daimler.

Sanofi-Aventis and Debiopharm, licensor of the patent rights, have signed settlement agreements with Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Fresenius Kabi (formerly Dabur) and Sandoz to partially resolve the litigation over certain formulations of Eloxatin (oxaliplatin) that hit the market last year.

GM to increase funding for Opel restructuring

VW profits fall

Operating profits also fell, down 71 percent from a year earlier to 1.9 billion euros. Revenues fell 8 percent to 105 billion euros. However, global sales rose 1.3 percent to 6.3 million vehicles. A jump in Chinese deliveries was to thank for that.

2009 UK car sales near 2 million

The figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that 1,994,999 vehicles were sold in 2009. That figure is down 6.4 percent on 2008 and the lowest since 1995. Sales in the latter half of the year did pick up though, having been boosted by the scrappage scheme.

Karl-Ulrich Köhler to join Corus as new COO
